Here are some projects I was working on before rebooting and focusing on my stories. Some of them may be rebooted at some point; in the meantime, feel free to peruse the archives.
I was raised with an incredibly toxic brand of conservative evangelical Christianity, and went through an atheist-agnostic phase that I think was necessary to clear that out. Part of my process was re-reading, re-watching and re-listening to some of the Christian pop culture media I was raised on. I tried not to either unfairly bash or defend it, but just re-examine it with a focus on discerning what was helpful and good to hold onto, and what was worth purging from my mind.
I stopped because I began to reconnect to my spiritual side, without necessarily becoming a Christian again. I’m not connected to any major faith at the moment, but just figuring out how to reconnect with some kind of spirituality that feels authentic and life-affirming, without specific religious beliefs. At some point I may blog about that journey, but for now it’s something I want to explore privately. Until I feel like talking publically about my beliefs again, this project is on hold.
The title pretty much says it all. I believe in the importance of diverse voices and narratives in our culture, and at one point I had to realize that I was not making enough effort to discover writers from more diverse backgrounds. As I found books I liked, I recommended them.
Right now, although I am still reading these books, I don’t have time to write as many reviews. But when life settles down, I do hope to resurrect this series. It was one of the most fun projects I have ever worked on.
